Our HQ may be based in Newquay but did you know that we have a smaller office in Bridport, Dorset, which is just off the Jurassic Coast? Just around the corner is Lyme Regis, a quaint little town with a rich history in paleontology.
Born over 200 years ago, Mary Anning was an earlier pioneer of paleontology and made many discoveries that have impacted the way we view the world today. Yet so many across the globe don’t know her name.
Over the years, there’s often been talk of raising a statue to commemorate and celebrate her achievements and the importance of her work. But, unfortunately, nothing has ever come of it.
Well, that was until Evie Swire, an eleven year old fossil mad girl, planted the spark of inspiration in the community.
Thus, the Mary Anning Rocks Crowdfunder was born.
They need to raise £100,000 to commission the statue of Mary, finally giving her the recognition she deserves in her birth place of Lyme Regis. They’re getting close to their target with over £78,000 raised so far!
They’ve also got some big name supporters. On their crowdfunding page, they explain, “We are extremely lucky to have the patronage and backing of not only some of the great and good from the world of science and Palaeontology, but we also have support from all sorts of different creative and amazing people who love this campaign for a multitude of reasons. They include Sir David Attenborough, Professor Alice Roberts, Professor Hugh Torrens. Dr Anjana Khatwa, TrowelBlazers, The Geologists’ Association, Dr Dean Lomax and the novelist Tracy Chevalier, to name a few.”
