With applications closing at the end of June, it’s the last chance for new or existing community businesses to access up to £10,000 in match funding through the Power to Change Community Business Crowdmatch programme.

Community businesses are locally rooted, accountable to their local community, generate some or all of their income through trading activities and create broad community impact for local people. At their heart lies a dedicated group of local people working hard to make a difference and make their local place better. In October 2021, Power to Change teamed up once again with Crowdfunder to deliver another phase of the Community Business Crowdmatch programme, helping community businesses to raise funds for a variety of different projects. The fund, which has distributed £183,109 to crowdfunding projects so far, is closing at the end of June.

Give4Gary received £5,000 from the initiative, enabling them to create a sensory room and garden for use by disabled children in Sandwell. The design included safe sensory planting that emphasised texture, smell, sight and sound, a space to interact with plants, equipment suitable for children with a disability, and a sensory room.

Receiving £7,500 from the fund, the Pearl Exchange raised £55,620 to keep their vital services running in order to support young adults in rural Cornwall and Devon through workshops, counselling, and outreach. The money also helped with the organisation’s bills and staff costs.

Sol Cafe, Birmingham’s first community led accessible pay-as-you-feel LGBTQ+ cafe received £1,000 in funding from Power to Change, enabling them to continue supporting their community and offering financial aid to individuals through paid volunteering.

So whether it’s launching new ideas to help a neighbourhood, helping to meet increased demand, saving a community space or helping to bridge a funding gap, the Community Business Crowdmatch will match fund what successful applicants raise from the crowd.

Rob Love, Crowdfunder’s CEO, said: “The Power to Change Community Business Crowdmatch is an excellent example of community spirit. It shows just how important community businesses are to local people and how they can create a real impact. Since the fund launched, we’ve seen such a broad range of projects find great success through crowdfunding, with many inspiring others to take the plunge. It’s fantastic to see that for every £1 of match funding from Power to Change, the projects are raising another £3.91.

“Though crowdfunding isn’t just about raising money. It’s a way of validating ideas, raising awareness for new projects, and building a lasting relationship with the community. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for these vital community businesses.”

Nicola Wylde, Programme Manager at Power to Change, said: “When it comes to charitable giving, we’re seeing more and more people looking to back projects making a real difference in their local area. Community businesses reinvest their profits for local benefit. With Crowdmatch, community businesses can not only harness this renewed localism we’ve seen emerge from the pandemic, they can make that money work harder and go even further for local people. It’s a win, win.”
